SART is an innovative, multidisciplinary team created for the purpose of providing quality, compassionate, consistent and on-going care to victims of sexual assault. Of the 146,000 women living in Polk County, nearly 46,000 have been sexually assaulted; it is estimated that one in three girls (33%) are sexually abused before age 18. Mid Iowa SART has served over 600 victims of sexual assault since its inception in February 2006, of which 96% were female and are examined and treated by Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs), registered nurses who have received specialized training in the collection of forensic evidence and loving care of survivors. On call 24/7, SANEs collaborate with Polk County Crisis and Advocacy Advocates, Law Enforcement, County Attorneys and all agencies involved in the care of the victim. SART is a community/Polk County partnership that exists with the support and funding of private donors and in kind donations of staff time from Polk County Crisis and Advocacy Services and Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa for coordination of this program.
It’s not a pleasant topic but one that must be faced directly – child abuse. Protecting children is everyone’s responsibility.
“Victims of child abuse are either too young or too afraid to talk about the pain of abusive trauma. They need someone to help them start the process of healing. Our team at the Regional Child Protection Center gives abuse children a new hope for healing from abuse.”
~ Rizwan Shah , MD
